    An evaluation of current SIMD programming models for C++

    SIMD extensions were added to microprocessors in the mid '90s to speed-up data-parallel code by vectorization. Unfortunately, the SIMD programming model has barely evolved and the most efficient utilization is still obtained with elaborate intrinsics coding. As a consequence, several approaches to write efficient and portable SIMD code have been proposed. In this work, we evaluate current programming models for the C++ language, which claim to simplify SIMD programming while maintaining high performance. The proposals were assessed by implementing two kernels: one standard floating-point benchmark and one real-world integer-based application, both highly data parallel. Results show that the proposed solutions perform well for the floating point kernel, achieving close to the maximum possible speed-up. For the real-world application, the programming models exhibit significant performance gaps due to data type issues, missing template support and other problems discussed in this paper

    Unidentified EGRET Sources and the Extragalactic Gamma-Ray Background

    The large majority of EGRET point sources remain to this day without an identified low-energy counterpart. Whatever the nature of the EGRET unidentified sources, faint unresolved objects of the same class must have a contribution to the diffuse gamma-ray background: if most unidentified objects are extragalactic, faint unresolved sources of the same class contribute to the background, as a distinct extragalactic population; on the other hand, if most unidentified sources are Galactic, their counterparts in external galaxies will contribute to the unresolved emission from these systems. Understanding this component of the gamma-ray background, along with other guaranteed contributions from known sources, is essential in any attempt to use gamma-ray observations to constrain exotic high-energy physics. Here, we follow an empirical approach to estimate whether a potential contribution of unidentified sources to the extragalactic gamma-ray background is likely to be important, and we find that it is.     Design and synthesis of multivalent α-1,2-trimannose-linked bioerodible microparticles for applications in immune response studies of Leishmania major infection

    Leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease, currently infects approximately 12 million people worldwide with 1 to 2 million new cases each year in predominantly underdeveloped countries. The treatment of the disease is severely underdeveloped due to the ability of the Leishmania pathogen to evade and abate immune responses. In an effort to develop anti-leishmaniasis vaccines and adjuvants, novel carbohydrate-based probes were made to study the mechanisms of immune modulation. In this study, a new bioerodible polyanhydride microparticle was designed and conjugated with a glycodendrimer molecular probe. This molecular probe incorporates a pathogen-like multivalent display of α-1,2-trimannose, for which a more efficient synthesis was designed, with a tethered fluorophore. Further attachment of the glycodendrimer to a biocompatible, surface eroding microparticle allows for targeted uptake and internalization of the pathogen-associated oligosaccharide by phagocytic immune cells. The α-1,2-trimannose-linked bioerodible microparticles were found to be safe after administration into the footpad of mice and demonstrated a similar response to α-1,2-trimannose-coated latex beads during L. major footpad infection. Furthermore, the bioerodible microparticles allowed for investigation of the role of pathogen-associated oligosaccharides for recognition by pathogen-recognition receptors during L. major-induced leishmaniasis

    An early Cambrian greenhouse climate

    The oceans of the early Cambrian (~541 to 509 million years ago) were the setting for a marked diversification of animal life. However, sea temperatures — a key component of the early Cambrian marine environment — remain unconstrained, in part because of a substantial time gap in the stable oxygen isotope (delta 18 O) record before the evolution of euconodonts. We show that previously overlooked sources of fossil biogenic phosphate have the potential to fill this gap. Pristine phosphatic microfossils from the Comley Limestones, UK, yield a robust delta 18 O signature, suggesting sea surface temperatures of 20° to 25°C at high southern paleolatitudes (~65°S to 70°S) between ~514 and 509 million years ago. These sea temperatures are consistent with the distribution of coeval evaporite and calcrete deposits, peak continental weathering rates, and also our climate model simulations for this interval. Our results support an early Cambrian greenhouse climate comparable to those of the late Mesozoic and early Cenozoic, offering a framework for exploring the interplay between biotic and environmental controls on Cambrian animal diversification

    Prevalence and potential relevance of hyperuricemia in pediatric kidney transplant recipients—a CERTAIN registry analysis

    Background: Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is frequently observed in pediatric kidney transplant recipients; symptomatic hyperuricemia, however, is a rare complication. Only few data are available in this patient population. We, therefore, investigated the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its association with kidney transplant function and blood pressure in a multicenter cohort of pediatric kidney transplant recipients. Methods: This is a retrospective, observational multicenter registry study. All pediatric kidney transplant recipients in the CERTAIN database with at least one documented serum uric acid level and a follow-up of 5 years posttransplant were eligible. We identified 151 patients with 395 measurements of serum uric acid. We calculated the prevalence of hyperuricemia, analyzed potential risk factors and clinical consequences such as elevated blood pressure and reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. Results: One hundred and ten of 395 (27.8%) serum uric acid levels were above 416 ”mol/L (7.0 mg/dL), defined as the upper limit of normal. Univariate analysis showed a significant (p = .026) inverse association of serum uric acid with eGFR overtime. There was no significant association of serum uric acid concentrations with body mass index (z-score), blood pressure (z-score), or sex. No episodes of gout were documented. Conclusion: This study shows that hyperuricemia is present in a considerable number of patients sometime after pediatric kidney transplantation and is associated with lower eGFR. Whether hyperuricemia contributes to faster decline of graft function or to the overall cardiovascular risk of these patients remains to be elucidated.     Characterization of a continuous muon source for the Muon-Induced X-ray Emission (MIXE) Technique

    The toolbox for material characterization has never been richer than today. Great progress with all kinds of particles and interaction methods provide access to nearly all properties of an object under study. However, a tomographic analysis of the subsurface region remains still a challenge today. In this regard, the Muon-Induced X-ray Emission (MIXE) technique has seen rebirth fueled by the availability of high intensity muon beams. We report here a study conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). It demonstrates that the absence of any beam time-structure leads to low pile-up events and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with less than one hour acquisition time per sample or data point. This performance creates the perspective to open this technique to a wider audience for the routine investigation of non-destructive and depth-sensitive elemental compositions, for example in rare and precious samples. Using a hetero-structured sample of known elements and thicknesses, we successfully detected the characteristic muonic X-rays, emitted during the capture of a negative muon by an atom, and the gamma-rays resulting from the nuclear capture of the muon, characterizing the capabilities of MIXE at PSI. This sample emphasizes the quality of a continuous beam, and the exceptional SNR at high rates. Such sensitivity will enable totally new statistically intense aspects in the field of MIXE, e.g. elemental 3D-tomography and chemical analysis. Therefore, we are currently advancing our proof-of-concept experiments with the goal of creating a full fledged permanently operated user station to make MIXE available to the wider scientific community as well as industry

    Plasma Chemokine Levels Are Associated with the Presence and Extent of Angiographic Coronary Collaterals in Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease

    In patients with chronic ischemic heart disease (IHD), the presence and extent of spontaneously visible coronary collaterals are powerful determinants of clinical outcome. There is marked heterogeneity in the recruitment of coronary collaterals amongst patients with similar degrees of coronary artery stenoses, but the biological basis of this heterogeneity is not known. Chemokines are potent mediators of vascular remodeling in diverse biological settings. Their role in coronary collateralization has not been investigated. We sought to determine whether plasma levels of angiogenic and angiostatic chemokines are associated with of the presence and extent of coronary collaterals in patients with chronic IHD.We measured plasma concentrations of angiogenic and angiostatic chemokine ligands in 156 consecutive subjects undergoing coronary angiography with at least one ≄90% coronary stenosis and determined the presence and extent of spontaneously visible coronary collaterals using the Rentrop scoring system. Eighty-eight subjects (56%) had evidence of coronary collaterals. In a multivariable regression model, the concentration of the angiogenic ligands CXCL5, CXCL8 and CXCL12, hyperlipidemia, and an occluded artery were associated with the presence of collaterals; conversely, the concentration of the angiostatic ligand CXCL11, interferon-Îł, hypertension and diabetes were associated with the absence of collaterals (ROC area 0.91). When analyzed according to extent of collateralization, higher Rentrop scores were significantly associated with increased concentration of the angiogenic ligand CXCL1 (p<0.0001), and decreased concentrations of angiostatic ligands CXCL9 (p<0.0001), CXCL10 (p = 0.002), and CXCL11 (p = 0.0002), and interferon-Îł (p = 0.0004).Plasma chemokine concentrations are associated with the presence and extent of spontaneously visible coronary artery collaterals and may be mechanistically involved in their recruitment
